Manhole Cover and Measurement

First thing first, what is a manhole cover? A manhole cover is a removable plate that covers a hole, to allow access for underground works. A bit like the lid of a jar.

To get the right manhole cover for the manhole, we recommend choosing a manhole cover that is the same or a bit bigger than the hole, the installation will be a little harder, but you will get a better result.

When it comes to measuring, we always go by the the opening size. This is the industry standard.

Recessed Manhole Covers

Recessed, means the cover is a set of frame and tray, with a recessed area to fill screed in and paving materials. It blends in with the surface and provides an aesthetically appealing finish.

Within the recessed manhole cover range, we offer a variety of options for different effects and loading capacities.

Water and Odour Tight Recessed Manhole Cover

These manhole covers have a gross plated weight load-bearing capacity of 5 tonnes, meeting the indoor regulations. It means they are suitable for pedestrian areas; and a polyethylene seal to make it water and odour tight, ideal for interior installation.

There are 6 sizes available with a number of stainless steel locking screws.

Size 450mm x 450mm 600mm x 450mm 600mm x 600mm 750mm x 600mm 750mm x 750mm 900mm x 600mm

The Water and Odour Tight Recessed Manhole Cover can be manufactured in galvanised steel and stainless steel. The galvanised steel water and odour tight cover is commonly used for commercial kitchens, bathrooms, basements etc.

Whereas the stainless steel water and odour cover is used for a swimming pool or anywhere with chlorinated water. This is because stainless steel can resist the rust created by the chlorinated water and cleaning materials, so it can last much longer.

Sealed and Locking Recessed Manhole Cover

Built-In Lifting Keys Sealed and Locking Recessed Manhole Cover

This manhole cover has a black polypropylene frame and a galvanised steel tray with built-in lifting keys attached. The black polypropylene frame can come with a circle outlet, making it into a square-to-round cover.

Featuring a factory-fitted rubber sealing gasket, four screws locking and a 5-tonne gross plated weight load-bearing capacity, this manhole cover is suitable for pedestrian applications, such as patios, tiles floors, internal areas etc.

You can also require a high-end finish, like brass, aluminium, or stainless steel.

Quote for this option.

Galvanised Steel Sealed and Locking Recessed Manhole Cover

A good alternative to Water and Odour Tight Recessed Manhole Cover.

Both frame and tray are made from galvanised steel with four stainless steel locking screws and factory-fitted double neoprene gasket seals. This seal will prevent odour from escaping.

When the cover is filled with concrete or screed infill, it has 5 tonnes gross plated weight load-bearing capacity, perfect for pedestrians.

And the Double-Sealed version is medium weight, which has 10 tonnes gross plated weight load-bearing capacity. It can be used for domestic vehicles, such as private driveways.

Block Paving and Flagging Recessed Manhole Cover

Completely Black Polypropylene Square-To-Round Block Paving and Flagging Recessed Manhole Cover

Recessed area for concrete or screed infill and has 35kN tonnes gross plated weight load-bearing capacity. That means the cover is suitable for domestic driveways.

The chamber can be fitted into a manhole, sizing from 220mm to 300mm, simply cut it to the desired size.

You can choose from having a factory-fitted lifting key or buy keys CD 556 lifting keys or CD 553 lifting keys.

Stainless Steel Recessed Manhole Cover

Stainless steel cover often comes in a higher price point, within reason. Stainless steel itself has multiple benefits; the most well-known would be the supreme resistance to corrosion, especially in areas of chlorine water. Another benefit of stainless steel is heat resistance.

This manhole cover features:

  • Double-sealed and locking with screed grip mesh
  • Shallow profile with a discrete polished top edge for the aesthetically pleasing finish
  • 4 screw-locking points to prevent unwanted odour and leakage

The manhole cover can be manufactured in either Grade 304 or 316 stainless steel for pedestrian uses, grade 316 being more suitable for swimming pool applications. You can also use it as an access cover over tanks or foul water applications.

Aluminium Recessed Manhole Cover

The aluminium recessed manhole cover uses a laser to cut the edge and base for a smooth professional finish.

For this reason, the aluminium recessed manhole cover is aesthetically pleasing, compared to other manhole covers.

The manhole cover is recessed for concrete, tile or similar infill. It also comes with a reinforcement mesh and a 3mm galvanised steel plate base for extra support. A dual seal design of a high-grade EPDM seal and “T-rubber” seal on the side of the frame, makes the cover odour and waterproof.

The aluminium cover comes in two versions: Double-Sealed and Triple-Sealed.

Double-Sealed has one high-grade EPDM seal and one “T-rubber” seal, the overall locking system is based on the weight of the infills, therefore it is recommended for exterior uses. On the other hand, Triple-Sealed has two high-grade EPDM seals at the bottom and one “T-rubber” seal at the side, along with 4 stainless steel screw locks, which makes the cover perfect for both interior and exterior applications.

GrassTop and GravelTop Recessed Manhole Cover

The difference between GrassTop cover and any others is the cover comes with pre-drilled drainage holes; double-layered factory-fitted membranes; and manhole cover tray depth options of 80 and100mm. Those features will help keep fresh grass healthy.

If you prefer something with less maintenance yet still want to have the grass feature, using a shallower cover and laying artificial turf might be a better option.

GravelTop cover has the same feature plus EcoGrid
permeable paving grids to hold materials in place and prevent gravel infills from spreading.

Solid Top Manhole Covers

Unlike recessed manhole covers, solid top covers have a frame and a solid plate, so the cover is fully visible on the surface. The upside is you install it and it is done, don’t have to think about filling it.

Sealed and Locking Solid Top Manhole Cover

Completely Black Polypropylene Square-To-Round Sealed and Locking Solid Top Manhole Cover

The cover itself weighs approximately 4kg, yet it has a 35kN gross plated weight load-bearing capacity, suitable for domestic driveways and light vehicle traffic.

Other features include a non-slip surface tread pattern and four screws with locking.

Galvanised Steel Sealed and Locking Solid Top Manhole Cover

Galvanising the carbon steel with a protective layer of zinc stops the steel from rusting and makes it more durable.

The size of the manhole cover provides you with a different tonne of gross plated weight load-beading capacities, starting from 5 tonnes to 17 tonnes.

Other features include a durbar tread finish, a neoprene seal and four British zinc plated screws.

Cast and Ductile Iron Solid Top Manhole Covers

These covers come with a black bitumen coated to protect against vapor, corrosion and water.

Compared to other silver finish solid top covers, Cast and Ductile Iron Solid Top Manhole Covers are much darker, making them less obvious on the ground, hence more suitable for highways.

There is a selection of weight load-bearing capacity cast and ductile iron covers to choose from, starting from A15 which is for pedestrian-only, to F900 highway applications.
