Manhole covers are no longer treated as purely functional items. In modern interiors, they sit within finished floors and are expected to blend in, not draw attention.
This project demonstrates how an aluminium recessed manhole cover was specified to suit a contemporary grey slab floor, balancing appearance with performance in an internal setting.
Project Overview
The installation was carried out by Hardy Paving Ltd as part of an internal flooring project using large format grey paving slabs.
The requirement was clear:
-
Maintain full access to the chamber
-
Keep the cover visually discreet
-
Prevent odours and moisture migration
-
Match the surrounding floor finish
An aluminium recessed manhole cover from the TSL-Pro-Line range was selected to meet these needs.
Why Aluminium Was Chosen
Aluminium recessed covers offer a slim profile compared with traditional steel or cast iron options. This reduces visual impact, particularly in refined internal spaces.
The extruded aluminium construction provides strength without excessive weight, making handling and installation easier while still supporting the required loads for internal environments.
In this case, the silver finish sat naturally alongside the grey slabs without introducing contrast or distraction.
Why a Triple-Sealed Cover Was Required
This was an internal installation, so sealing performance mattered as much as appearance.
The Triple-Sealed TSL-Pro-Line cover was specified due to its sealing arrangement:
-
Two base seals to prevent odour and water transmission
-
An integrated T-rubber side seal to block dirt ingress
-
Elasticity in the side seal to reduce tension between frame and tray
This sealing configuration is suited to interior floors where odour control and cleanliness are essential.
Functional Details
Beyond sealing, the cover includes several practical features that support long term use:
-
Reinforcement mesh within the tray for structural integrity
-
Plastic dust caps to protect fixings
-
Aluminium lifting keys supplied for safe access
These details ensure the cover performs reliably without compromising the finished floor.
Integration With Adjacent Drainage
The aluminium recessed manhole cover was installed close to a silver anodised aluminium threshold drain.
Matching materials and finishes allowed both elements to sit comfortably within the same space. Rather than competing visually, they work together as part of a coordinated floor layout.
This type of material consistency is often overlooked but makes a significant difference in finished interiors.

Client Feedback
Hardy Paving Ltd provided the following feedback after installation:
“We love the new covers you kindly supplied and hopefully, the clients appreciate them too.”
Summary
This project shows how aluminium recessed manhole covers can be used successfully in internal slabbed floors.
By selecting the correct material, sealing type and tray depth, access covers can be incorporated into finished interiors without compromising appearance, hygiene or performance.
