The requirement was for a robust access cover over a septic tank located in a domestic setting.

The chosen solution was a 900 × 600 mm ductile iron manhole cover, selected to fully span the access opening while supporting vehicle traffic associated with a residential driveway. The priority was durability, load performance and long term reliability rather than concealment. |
Why Ductile Iron Was Specified
Ductile iron remains the correct material choice for many access applications where strength and impact resistance are required.
For this installation, the cover offered:
- High load capacity suitable for domestic vehicles
- A slip resistant tread pattern on the lid
- Long term resistance to movement and cracking
- Compatibility with ground bearing installations
Rated to B125, the cover is suitable for driveways and lightly trafficked areas, including vans and service vehicles when installed correctly.
Handling and Access Considerations
The cover weighs approximately 56 kg.
While it can be lifted by a single person, safe handling should always be considered. In practice, two person lifting is preferable to reduce risk during inspection or maintenance.
This weight also contributes to stability, reducing the risk of lid movement over time.
Getting the Size Right
When specifying a manhole cover for septic tank access, the critical measurement is the clear opening required, not the size of any previous cover.
The frame must fully bear on solid ground around the access opening to perform correctly. Measuring the ground opening avoids gaps, rocking frames and unsafe seating.
This applies equally to drainage chambers, tanks and inspection pits.
