Why Manhole Covers Stand Out in Gardens

Manhole covers are rarely designed with garden conditions in mind. Solid top covers remain permanently visible. Standard recessed covers often look acceptable at first, but over time they become obvious again.

The reason is simple. Gardens behave differently to paved areas. Water needs to drain freely. Fine soil moves with rainfall. Grass relies on oxygen as much as moisture. Most recessed trays are sealed containers in this environment, not part of the ground.

Once water begins to sit in the tray, grass growth becomes unreliable and the outline of the cover slowly reappears.

Drainage Is the Core Issue

In lawned and landscaped areas, drainage failure is usually the starting point.

Without a designed drainage path, rainwater collects in the recessed tray. Fine soil then washes down and blocks whatever voids exist. Grass roots sit in wet material for long periods and die back.

These issues are not caused by poor installation. They occur because standard recessed covers are intended for block paving and slabs, where impermeable finishes are expected.

How GrassTop Covers Are Designed Differently

GrassTop recessed manhole covers were developed specifically for external use in gardens and landscaped areas.

The tray is pre drilled to allow water to pass through rather than collect. A double layer of factory fitted specialist geotextile membranes sits beneath the infill, filtering fines while maintaining permeability. This allows grass to establish and behave in the same way as the surrounding lawn.

The cover does not rely on sealing. It relies on controlled drainage.

As a result, the surface remains level, grass growth is consistent and the cover becomes visually unobtrusive over time.

Suitable Infills Beyond Turf

Although primarily used in grassed areas, GrassTop covers are not limited to turf.

They are also suitable for porous infills such as:

  • Rubber crumb

  • Artificial turf

  • Bark chippings

  • Decorative gravels in low traffic areas

The key requirement is that water can drain through the surface and out of the tray.

Where gravel is trafficked, additional confinement is required.

Where EcoGrid Recessed Covers Are Used Instead

Loose stone placed into standard recessed trays tends to migrate under foot and vehicle load. Over time, the infill spreads and the frame becomes exposed.

EcoGrid recessed manhole covers address this by incorporating a load bearing grid within the tray. This retains the infill while maintaining drainage, making the cover suitable for gravel driveways, paths and reinforced grass parking areas.

The principle remains the same. Drainage first, surface stability second.

Summary

If a manhole cover is installed in a garden, it should behave like the surrounding ground, not like paving.

GrassTop recessed manhole covers are designed around that principle. By allowing water to drain and soil to remain stable, they avoid the long term appearance issues commonly associated with standard covers in landscaped areas.
