What Is a Recessed Manhole Cover?

A recessed manhole cover is an access cover with a tray built into the lid. You fill the tray with the same paving, tiles or screed as the surrounding area, so the cover sits flush and blends in while still giving access to the chamber below.

They are used in patios, block-paved driveways, internal floors and landscaped areas. In most homes the chamber below is an inspection chamber rather than a full manhole, which is why these products are also called recessed inspection covers, recessed inspection chamber covers or recessed drain covers.

Types of Recessed Manhole Cover

Each type of recessed cover suits a different job. Block paving covers are made for patios and driveways, while sealed and locking recessed covers stop odours escaping, so they are a good fit for internal floors.

If you need a tighter seal, choose aluminium double-sealed or aluminium triple-sealed covers. For landscaped areas there are grass and gravel recessed covers, and for tiled floors there are tile insert recessed covers.

Before you order, check four things: the clear opening (the size of the opening into your chamber, not the outer frame), the tray depth (deep enough for your paving plus its bedding layer), the load rating (10 tonnes or more for driveways with cars) and whether you need a sealed cover.

FAQs

Can you drive over a recessed manhole cover?

Yes, as long as the cover is rated for vehicles. Lower-rated covers suit patios and gardens, while 10-tonne covers are the usual choice for driveways with cars. Check the rating in the product title before you order, and read our guide to the seven things to consider when choosing a manhole cover.

How do you lift a recessed manhole cover?

Recessed covers have keyholes in the lid for lifting keys. Because the tray is filled with paving or tiles, the lid is heavy, so use all the lifting keys the cover is designed for (usually two or four) and lift straight up. Lifting keys are in our manhole accessories range, and our guide on where to find your lifting keys explains which covers include them.

What tray depth do you need for block paving?

Choose a tray deep enough for your blocks plus the bedding layer underneath, so the paving finishes level with the surrounding surface. Most block paving needs one of our deeper trays.

What is the difference between a recessed and a solid top manhole cover?

A recessed cover has a tray you fill with the surrounding surface so it blends in. A solid top cover is a visible lid that is quicker to install and suits areas where looks matter less. See our solid top manhole covers if you do not need the cover to blend in, or read all types of manhole cover explained.
