Grass and gravel manhole covers are recessed access covers designed for installations where a natural or loose surface finish is required rather than paving or tiles. The recessed tray is adapted to support soil, turf or gravel while still allowing access to the inspection chamber below.

These covers are commonly used in lawns, gardens and landscaped areas where a visible cover would interrupt the surface. Once installed, the tray is filled with a suitable growing medium or aggregate so the cover blends into the surrounding ground. This allows the access point to remain functional without affecting the overall appearance of the space.

Grass covers typically incorporate drainage holes and membrane layers within the tray. These allow water to pass through while supporting the soil layer above, helping maintain natural drainage conditions across the lawn. Over time, grass can establish within the tray so the cover becomes part of the surrounding surface.

Gravel fill covers are used where loose aggregate is required, such as gravel driveways or permeable access routes. Some designs incorporate stabilising grid systems within the tray to prevent movement of the infill under foot or vehicle loading.

Selection depends on the clear opening of the chamber, the type of surface finish being installed and the loading expected. These covers are commonly used where visual impact and surface permeability are key considerations.
